Learning, Listening and Building Momentum
I can’t quite believe that it has been nearly 3 months since I stepped into a new role at Utility People — Director of Growth & Operations. It was an exciting move and marked a shift in how we’re growing as a business. My role now spans two key areas: driving business development and ensuring our operations are scalable, efficient and ready for what comes next.
It’s been a fast-paced few months, but it’s also been full of learning, one of my first priorities was to understand the full picture of where we are and where we’re going. That meant listening — to the sales team, to leadership and to our clients. It also meant asking some tough questions about how our internal processes support our growth ambitions.
I’ve spent time refining how we track performance, reviewing our pipeline strategy and working on improving clarity and collaboration across teams. We’re in a space that’s shifting fast — the energy and utilities sector, especially areas like renewables and infrastructure, is evolving. Our job is to make sure we evolve with it.
A Few Highlights
Over the past three months, several moments stand out:
- Cybersecurity & Trust: We published a blog on how recruitment businesses like ours are facing increasing pressure to protect candidate data. This topic resonated because trust sits at the heart of what we do — and cybersecurity isn’t just a compliance box to tick; it’s part of the value we deliver.
- 3 Peaks Challenge for Mind: On a more personal note, I took on the 3 Peaks Challenge with a few friends and together we raised £6,400 for Mind, the mental health charity. It was tough — physically and mentally — but the experience reminded me how resilience and purpose show up both inside and outside of work. Huge thanks to everyone who supported the cause.
- Laying the Groundwork for Growth: We’ve begun shaping our sector plans across renewables and infrastructure. There’s still work to do, but the direction is clear — clients need partners who understand their challenges and can move at their pace. We’re positioning ourselves to be exactly that.
What’s Next?
Looking ahead, my focus is on alignment. That means making sure our commercial ambitions are supported by the right operational backbone — scalable systems, clean data, clear processes.
It also means leaning into the energy transition and understanding where we can add the most value — whether that’s in compliance-heavy infrastructure projects or high-growth clean energy companies scaling fast.
We’re also continuing to build content, campaigns and tools that help us connect with the right clients, partners and talent.
A Final Thought
Three months in, I’ve learned a lot, and I know there’s plenty more to come. This role is about creating space: space for growth, for better ways of working and for people to do their best work.
If you’re working in energy, utilities, renewables or infrastructure and are thinking about how to scale sustainably, I’d love to connect.
We’re just getting started — and there’s more to come.
