Leading with Positivity and Purpose in Recruitment
At Utility People, we know that great recruitment isn’t just about matching CVs with job specs—it’s about people. Meet Kerry Porter, our recruitment team leader whose passion, experience, energy and drive make a real difference to both her team and our clients.
About You
Tell us a bit about yourself.
I’m someone who really appreciates the simple things—peaceful dog walks with Ron, quality time with my niece and nephews (I proudly wear the “cool auntie” badge) and the occasional bottomless brunch. That said, I’m usually tucked up in bed by 9pm… I think I might be getting old!
How long have you been with Utility People?
In total, I’ve been with Utility People for six and a half years (with a short break in between) and it’s been such a rewarding journey. The culture here is genuinely supportive and collaborative, and every day brings something new.
What do you love most about your job?
Leading and mentoring my team is by far the most rewarding part of my role. I love helping others progress, build confidence and find success in their careers. I also really enjoy working with clients and candidates to make meaningful matches that have a lasting impact.
Your Career & Experience
How long have you worked in the industry, and what’s your journey been like?
I’ve been in recruitment for over 10 years now. I started with no experience, but thanks to Linda’s mentorship, I found my feet and grew into the role. I later joined Corona Energy as Lead Internal Recruitment Consultant, where I managed over 260 hires across all stages of the recruitment process.
That experience—across both agency and internal recruitment—has given me a strong understanding of both client and candidate needs and it’s something I draw on every day to build better, stronger relationships.
What does a typical day look like for you?
No two days are ever the same, which is one of the things I love about this industry. I usually start by catching up with the team and supporting them with any challenges. From there, it’s a mix of meetings, sourcing talent and networking—plus a few surprises along the way!
Life Outside of Work
Tell us a bit about your life outside the office.
Outside of work, I focus on spending time with the people (and pets!) I love. Whether I’m walking Ron, catching up with friends, or just enjoying a quiet evening in, those moments keep me grounded.
What keeps you busy when you’re not working?
Staying active is a big part of my routine—I plan my workouts weekly to help keep my energy and focus up. I also love winding down with a good TV series or enjoying a relaxing walk.
Final Thoughts
How do you balance work and personal life?
I’ll admit—I’m still learning! But I’ve found that planning is everything. Whether it’s booking time for workouts or blocking out time for school pick-ups, managing my schedule keeps me balanced. I’ve also learned to be flexible and adjust when needed without losing sight of my priorities.
What motivates you, professionally and personally?
Health and happiness are at the heart of everything I do. Professionally, I’m driven by the opportunity to keep growing, learning and helping others succeed. Personally, I’m working toward a dream of a house with a hot tub… and lots of puppies!
One piece of advice for someone new to recruitment?
Resilience is everything. Be patient, stay organised and—above all—love people! If you bring positive energy to what you do, success will follow.
